Supporting Romero House, my birthday wish

Continuing a tradition of my own, my birthday with this year is for you to donate what you can to Romero Moves. I am walking 5K with my mom and friends to raise funds for refugees’ most urgent needs.

I started to volunteer at Romero House as a Receptionist just coming out of the pandemic in March 2022. I realized at the time that I was a bit weary of in-person contact outside my yoga classes. Little did I now the new adventure that I was embarking on.

My role year as a receptionist taught me many things. I quickly became involved in helping with intake interviews. I learn to listen with compassion, to avoid judging people for their choices, to translate without altering meaning, and to stop myself from giving advice. After a year, I came to terms that listening to heart-wrenching stories was more than I can handle and I switched my role to helping with the Website and technology support.

Romero House is a very inclusive, companionate, and passionate group of people that works very hard to improve the plait of refugee claimants. As an immigrant, I can relate to some of their struggles. I can to Canada 34 years ago with just 2 suitcases. Many refugees come with just the clothes they ware. I knew only a couple of people but many people I met at work were very kind and supported me making my process to adapt to this country easier. Romero House provides more than services, it strives to be a community and offers genuine friendship!

Please share this post and help Romero House to reach their goal of 40K!
