Beating the flu…
Flu season is full in gear and with this arctic weather is no fun to be sick, right? and what better way to beat the flu than using your own body’s capabilities and enjoy the winter weather…
Most of our bodies are very acidic due to diet, stress, too much exercise, and other things. Viruses prosper in acidic environments. Yes, maintaining an alkaline body helps to be rid of disease! Also, our blood is slightly alkaline and the body does whatever it takes to keep it that way, including drawing minerals like calcium from our bones. Another reason you want to stay alkaline…
Alkaline diet
The good news is that we can help keep our bodies alkaline by eating alkaline-forming foods. Just to clarify a little … the chemistry of the food changes in the stomach so for example, limes are acidic but they are alkaline-forming after digestion due to its mineral content.
Here is were it gets a little tricky, we need a reference to learn which foods are alkaline-forming and which ones are acid-forming. As a general rule with few exceptions, vegetables and fruits are alkaline-forming and animal protein and grains are very acidic… Dark green leafy vegetables and raspberries are very alkaline!!! Click here to see a page that has very comprehensive list to help you figure out what alkaline-forming foods to favor.
So loading up on vegetables and fruits and making it 70% of your intake will help you beat those flus… and in cases where you can or you feel you are already coming down, here are a couple of ways to become more alkaline quickly:
- Drink 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda without aluminum) in half a cup of warm water before you go to bed on an empty stomach. Sodium bicarbonate is the most alkaline substance we can eat.
- Drink the juice of 1/2 lime in one cup warm water first thing in the morning. Wait 20 min before you drink or eat something. You can keep drinking warm water with lime juice through the day.
Affirmations to heal the flu
Use affirmations to replace the old thinking pattern that causes flu with a new thinking pattern that helps you heal.
Louise Hay says that flu can be a response to mass negativity and beliefs. Watching so many people feeling blue and down because of the cold weather is not so hard to believe. She offers this affirmation for flu:
“I am beyond group beliefs or the calendar. I am free from all congestion and influence”
Linga mudra
The linga mudra (body posture associated with healing) is believed to make the body more resistant to cold and chest infections. This mudra generates heat in the body, boosts the immune system, and loosens mucous accumulated in the lungs. To do this mudra:
- Seat in a comfortable position with your back straight
- Place both palms together and clasp your fingers
- Keep one thumb upright encircled by the thumb and index finger of the other hand
- Keep both hands in front of the chest
- Focus on your breath. Make it smooth, even and continuous
Practice this mudra for 3 times a day up to 15 min. Also, you can practice the Shiva linga mudra that is a great healer. For details on how to practice it, see Healing through yoga.
Alkaline broth
This recipe is from Dr. Rau. This broth is high in minerals and helps you correct a poor diet, eliminate acid, and improve day and night rhythms.
If you have the flu or you feel that you might be coming down, take through out the day and helps to keep hydrated as well. I also take it when I am feeling weak and drained or when I have been eating some junk. I feel like a million bucks after a few cups.
